Relocating during COVID-19 — Yes, it can be done

In my 25+ years in real estate, I thought I had seen it all. Then, the Oakland Raiders relocated to Henderson, Nevada and are now the Las Vegas Raiders. Then, I KNEW I had seen it all, and what happens? Along comes a pandemic.

You don’t need me to tell you that COVID-19 has upended life. The world has taken a collective timeout, reviewed different game plans, and adjusted strategies. Many of us have had to reschedule life events or put them on hold — like witnessing the inaugural kick-off at Allegiant Stadium, graduation ceremonies, weddings, once-in-a-lifetime trips, and other precious moments and occasions.

There are those who have put relocating plans on hold; while others don’t have a choice and must move. New job. Family matters. Contractual obligations. An undying love for the Raiders, whether they be in the Golden State or the Silver one.

Yes, it is possible to purchase a new home and move during COVID-19, but you must do so with an abundance of caution for your health and the health of others. Being informed is the best starting point. Check on the latest news from the Center for Disease Control. Your home state’s Web site may have more specific info and guidelines. Here is California’s site, and here is Nevada’s.

Now that you are following the best practices of safety guidelines, make sure your moving team displays the same level of caution. Here’s a quick list of questions to ask prior to moving day:

  • Have any movers or other team members been exposed to COVID-19 or in areas, such as hospitals, that have a concentration of cases?

  • In addition to masks, gloves, and sanitizers, what safety measures do you employ?

  • May I see a copy of your company’s guidelines for COVID-19?

Here are some safety fundamentals worth repeating:

  • Sanitize your belongings.

  • Frequently wash your hands. Don’t touch your face.

  • Wear gloves and a face mask in the presence of others.

  • Social distancing for the win.

  • Reschedule moving day if you don’t feel well.

Our pre-pandemic blog post Must-haves and To-do’s for Relocation or Moving Out of State has helpful information on preparing for a move, too. Read it here

If there’s one thing COVID-19 has taught us, it’s that we don’t know much. Information and guidelines are changing by the minute. Stay informed. Stay safe.
